Dataset description This dataset presents harmonised statistics on the assets and liabilities of insurance corporations (ICs) which belong to the sector “insurance corporations” in the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010). ICs are divided into reinsurance corporations, life insurance corporations, non-life insurance corporations and composite insurance corporations. These statistics replace the non-harmonised euro area insurance corporations statistics that have been published by the ECB in the context of euro area insurance corporations and pension funds (ICPF) statistics. The harmonised statistics differ from the previously published statistics in terms of coverage and definition - a direct comparison of the new and old statistics is therefore not always possible. The previously published ICPF statistics are also available in the Statistical Data Warehouse for the reference periods Q1 2008 to Q2 2016.
Short presentation of data items These statistics refer to the assets and liabilities of euro area insurance corporations, covering both outstanding amounts and transactions.
Types of data source The legal requirements for insurance corporations (IC) statistics are laid down in Regulation ECB/2014/50, which defines the statistical standards on the type of information on their assets and liabilities that have to be reported to the national central banks by ICs. These in turn report national aggregates to the ECB. The national central banks are allowed to derive the necessary statistical information, to the extent possible, from data reported for supervisory purposes under the EU’s Solvency II framework (See ( The census of insurance corporations (list of ICs) is published by the ECB (See
Reference period These statistics are available as of reference period Q3 2016 and replace the non-harmonised euro area insurance corporations statistics which have been published by the ECB in the context of euro area insurance corporations and pension funds (ICPF) statistics. ICPF data are generally available for the reference periods Q1 2008 to Q2 2016, with a further estimate for Q3 2016 for the series on insurance corporations, in order to provide users with a link between the old and new datasets.
